Exterior Remodeling Services in Rapid City, SD
Siding, decks, windows, doors, fences, and sunrooms across the Black Hills. Built for South Dakota weather extremes by Bruce Miller, a licensed general contractor with 50 years of hands-on trade experience.
The Outside of Your House Faces Some of the Toughest Weather in the Lower 48
Western South Dakota beats up an exterior in ways most parts of the country never see. Hailstorms drop golfball-sized stones across whole neighborhoods. Winter winds out of the Black Hills hit 60 mph regularly. Summer sun bleaches anything south-facing, and freeze-thaw cycles work expansion gaps and sealants harder than they are designed for. The flashing job that survives twenty years in Texas fails in five out here. The window install that holds up in Arizona leaks the first February in Rapid City.
Bruce Miller has been installing siding, decks, windows, doors, and fences across Rapid City and the Black Hills for decades, and every product spec he uses is chosen with this climate in mind. We install brands and finishes that survive hail strikes, fastener systems rated for high winds, flashing details that handle ice damming, and deck materials that resist UV bleaching. The exterior of your home is the membrane between your family and the weather — it deserves to be built like one.

Most exterior failures in the Black Hills are not material failures — they are install failures. Siding installed without proper house wrap traps moisture and rots the sheathing within ten years. Windows installed without flashing tape pour ice melt straight into the wall cavity every February. Decks built with inadequate footings heave, twist, and pull away from the house after three winters. Bruce spends real time on flashing details, fastener selection, and sealant systems because that is what keeps an exterior tight in this climate.
We also tell you the truth about repair vs replacement. Some windows just need new weatherstripping and balances — replacing them is a waste of money. Some decks have rotting joists that make a re-deck pointless without addressing the underlying frame. Some siding can be partially replaced after hail damage instead of a full re-side. Bruce gives you the honest scope, not the upsold one.

Our Exterior Remodeling Process
Every exterior project, from a single window replacement to a full re-side or deck build, follows the same four-step process.
On-Site Assessment
Bruce walks the exterior, inspects the existing condition (sheathing, flashing, framing, footings, drainage), measures every opening or run, and identifies underlying issues before quoting. Half the value of a Black Hills exterior quote is finding the rot, the failed flashing, or the heaved post that the previous installer missed.
Material Selection and Planning
We walk through siding profiles, deck materials, window glazing options, and door specs against your budget and your house. Every recommendation factors in hail rating, wind load, UV exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles. You get straight tradeoffs, not a sales pitch on the most expensive option.
Tear-Off, Prep, and Install
Existing materials come off cleanly. Sheathing, framing, and footings get inspected and repaired before new install. Flashing and weather barriers go down per manufacturer spec. Fasteners are spaced and torqued to wind-load requirements. Every exterior detail is built like the next storm is coming, because it is.
Trim, Caulk, Punch List, Walkthrough
Trim, sealant, paint touch-up, and final caulking complete the project. We walk every penetration, joint, and transition with you, fix every punch-list item, and only close the project when the entire exterior passes your inspection. Manufacturer warranties handed over at the end.

Exterior Remodeling FAQs
Which siding holds up best in Black Hills hail and wind?
For Rapid City and the surrounding Black Hills, fiber cement and high-impact-rated vinyl are the two best performers under hail. Steel siding is also excellent for hail resistance but costs more. Standard vinyl is fine in protected areas but dents and cracks under direct hail strikes. Engineered wood (LP SmartSide, for example) holds up well to wind but needs more attention to flashing and seam sealing than fiber cement. Bruce walks you through which siding fits your exposure, your HOA rules, and your budget.
How long does a deck take to build in Rapid City?
Most residential decks take 1 to 3 weeks from demolition (if applicable) to final railing. A 200 sq ft pressure-treated deck on simple footings can wrap in a week. A 400 sq ft composite deck with built-in benches, lighting, and a pergola runs closer to three weeks. Footings have to set, so even a fast deck has a 24-48 hour pause for concrete cure. Bruce gives you a firm day-by-day schedule at the quote stage.
Do you replace windows in winter, or do I have to wait for spring?
We replace windows year-round in Rapid City, including winter. The trick is doing them one or two at a time, so the home is never exposed for more than a few hours. We use temporary plastic and a heated work tent if needed for very cold days. Winter window installs are common because product lead times are shorter and crews are more available. The only time we recommend waiting is during a sustained sub-zero stretch with active wind.
Can a sunroom be used in winter in the Black Hills?
Yes — if it is a four-season sunroom, properly insulated, with double or triple-glazed windows, an insulated foundation, and a connected HVAC system. A three-season sunroom is comfortable spring through fall but will be too cold to use January through March. Bruce designs sunrooms specifically for the season range you want. Most clients in Rapid City go four-season because winter is exactly when a sunny, warm room facing the Black Hills is most valuable.
My fence keeps heaving — can it be fixed?
Almost always, yes — and the cause is almost always frost-line footings done too shallow. South Dakota frost depth is around 42 inches in most of the Black Hills. Fences with posts set 24 or 30 inches deep will heave every winter and lean by spring. The fix is to dig new posts to proper depth (or use helical posts) and re-attach existing panels if they are sound. We do a fence assessment as part of every quote so you know whether to repair or replace.
