Rapid City Interior Finish Remodeling Services
Trim carpentry, lighting installation, and finish detail work across the Black Hills. The small details that make a remodel look custom instead of contractor-grade, built by Bruce Miller, a licensed general contractor with 50 years of hands-on trade experience.
Finish Carpentry Is What Separates a Custom Home from a Builder Special
The difference between a house that feels custom and one that feels like a tract build comes down almost entirely to finish work. Crown molding, properly mitered baseboards, casing returns at door openings, hand-fitted trim around odd-shape windows, recessed lighting layout that makes a room feel taller and brighter. These are the details a finish carpenter cares about that a general framer never sees. They cost very little compared to the materials behind the walls, and they completely change how a space reads.
Bruce Miller has spent 50 years sweating these details across Rapid City and the Black Hills. We do trim carpentry as a standalone service for homeowners upgrading the feel of an existing home, as part of a remodel, or paired with new construction. We also handle lighting installation, recessed, accent, sconces, under-cabinet, vanity, coordinated with the trim plan so switches, fixtures, and casing all line up on the wall. Small project, big impact.

See lighting options →Trim and Lighting Are Where Most Crews Get Lazy
Finish work is the last phase of a remodel, which is where rushed crews start cutting corners. Mitered corners with hairline gaps. Caulked baseboards instead of properly scribed. Recessed lights placed at random instead of laid out on the room dimensions. Crown molding cope joints faked with caulk. None of it is structural, none of it shows up in inspection, but every single client notices it the day after the crew leaves and is reminded for the next twenty years. Bruce treats finish carpentry as the part of the project that gets seen most, because it is.
We also bring an eye for what trim and lighting choices actually fit your home. A 1970s ranch in Rapid Valley does not need 6-inch crown molding, it looks wrong. A late-Victorian in downtown Rapid City needs more than the basic 3.25-inch baseboard from the big-box store. Bruce will tell you when to upgrade, when to keep it simple, and which lighting layouts will make a room feel right for the way you actually use it.
- Properly coped corners on every crown joint
- Scribed baseboards on uneven floors and walls
- Casing returns and detail at every door opening
- Lighting layouts based on room use, not random spacing
- Code-compliant electrical, dimmer, and switch wiring
- LED-rated fixtures and proper color-temperature selection
- Wood species and profile recommendations matched to home style

Our Interior Finish Process
Every trim, lighting, or finish carpentry project follows the same four-step process.
Walkthrough and Style Discussion
Bruce walks the home with you, measures every wall and opening, and discusses what the trim or lighting plan needs to accomplish. We talk profiles, wood species, paint vs stain, and lighting layouts. The goal is a finish package that matches your home and your taste, not generic builder spec.
Material Selection and Order
We source primed MDF, paint-grade pine, stain-grade hardwoods, custom milled profiles, and lighting fixtures based on your selections. For larger jobs, we order a small overage so any defect on a piece does not delay the install. Bruce confirms every selection in writing before ordering.
Install
Trim is cut, mitered, coped, scribed, and installed by a finish carpenter who has been doing this for decades. Joints are tight before nailing, not after caulking. Lighting cans are laid out on the floor, marked with chalk, then cut and wired. Switches and dimmers are coordinated with the rest of the room.
Caulk, Putty, Paint Touch-Up, Walkthrough
Nail holes are puttied. Joints get a thin bead of paintable caulk where wood meets wall. Paint touch-up matches the existing wall finish. Lighting is dimmer-tested and balanced. We walk every room with you under both day and evening light, and only close the project when every detail passes your inspection.

Interior Finish FAQs
How much trim should I add to a typical room?
It depends on the room style and ceiling height. A standard 8-foot ceiling in a contemporary room usually gets 5-inch baseboards, simple casing, and either no crown or a modest 3-inch crown. A 9-foot or 10-foot ceiling can carry 6-inch baseboards, deeper casing, and 5- to 6-inch crown without feeling heavy. A formal dining room or library benefits from chair rail, wainscoting, or board-and-batten on top of the basics. Bruce walks every room and recommends profiles that match the architecture, not over-trim or under-trim.
Can you upgrade trim without removing the existing baseboards?
Sometimes, for example, by adding a cap to existing baseboards to make them taller, or layering a back-band on existing casing. But most upgrades from thin builder-grade trim to substantial profiles require removing the existing trim, patching the wall behind, and installing fresh. Painted MDF or pine takes paint cleanly so the new trim integrates with adjacent walls without touch-up issues. Bruce can usually re-use existing nail backing when removing.
How many recessed lights should a room have?
The simple rule is one light for every 16 to 25 sq ft, depending on room use and ceiling height. A 200 sq ft kitchen usually needs 8 to 10 cans for proper task lighting. A 200 sq ft living room might only need 4 cans plus a dimmer for ambient light, paired with table or floor lamps. Bedrooms typically only need 2 to 4. Bruce never installs cans on a generic grid, he places them based on where you actually need light: over countertops, over reading chairs, in walk-in closets, etc.
Do you handle the electrical for new lighting installs?
Yes. As a licensed general contractor, Bruce coordinates the electrical work for every lighting install, running wire, tying into existing circuits, installing new switches, dimmers, and timers, and pulling permits when required. Code compliance, proper wire gauge, GFCI/AFCI requirements, and load calculations are all handled. We do not install lighting and tell you to find your own electrician.
How long does a trim or lighting project take?
Most single-room trim packages wrap in 1 to 3 days depending on profile complexity, paint, and any patching. A whole-house trim install runs 1 to 2 weeks. Lighting installs are similar, a single room with 4 to 6 cans takes a day. A whole-home recessed lighting plan with under-cabinet, accent, and vanity work takes 3 to 5 days. Bruce gives you a firm schedule at the quote stage.
